How Can I Know if My Priorities Are Off Track?

How miserable I am! I feel like the fruit picker after the harvest who can find nothing to eat. Not a cluster of grapes or a single early fig can be found to satisfy my hunger.

Micah 7:1, NLT

It’s like slaving away in the kitchen for hours on end preparing a holiday meal, only for it to be over in fifteen or twenty minutes. We’ve probably all experienced times in our lives when we worked hard on something we cared about but later felt like nothing really came from it. We find ourselves raiding the kitchen at midnight, hoping there’s still some green bean casserole left.

A lot of life can feel this way, especially if we get off track about what really deserves our time and energy. Burnout in some form usually follows. God understands that we are finite, that we have only so much time, so much energy, and so many resources. He made us that way.

This is why we need to take our plans to him before we get too far. Otherwise, we might be wasting our time and energy on something he never meant for us to chase.

ACT

Plan a dinner you mean to linger over with friends. Be creative about how you can make it last in order to nurture truly engaging connections between people.

pray

God, I don’t like wasting my time and energy. Show me where my plans might lead me astray. Help me create plans that make me hopeful.
