The word confidence is related to the Latin verb confidere, which is in turn derived from con (meaning “with”) and fidere (meaning “to trust”), resulting in the idea of putting one’s complete trust in something.

We tend to think of confidence as something we build in ourselves, an attitude that we exude to the world. It gives me visions of Julie Andrews swinging her guitar case through Austria, singing, “I have confidence in confidence alone . . .”

But this verse gives us another way to look at confidence. Instead of looking inside ourselves or reading another self-help book, the Bible invites us to look at God alone as the one to put our complete trust in. The One who calls the stars by name is worthy of our confidence.
