Can God hear me up in heaven?

May you hear the humble and earnest requests from me and your people Israel when we pray toward this place. Yes, hear us from heaven where you live, and when you hear, forgive.

1 Kings 8:30, NLT

Learning to pray as a child can be so confusing. Is God right here and if he is why don’t I see him? Is he in heaven? Can he really hear me no matter what? How does he hear me and all the other people at the same time? Can he hear when I tell my friends secrets?

I have no idea how he does it, but I do know that he can hear every plea, whisper, and shout no matter where or when. In fact, you don’t have to be a child to be awed by this. And since we have no way of understanding the magnitude of his listening, we can think that our little prayers aren’t worth his time and energy.

Does he want me to ask for forgiveness for that little lie? Doesn’t he have better things to do? God’s attributes – the characteristics that make God who he is – are all infinite, unending. That includes his thoughts, his hearing, his love, everything. Each prayer, each request for forgiveness is absolutely heard by God.

So that little lie? Yeah, he wants to hear about that one, too.

ACT

Think back over the last week to any sins that you may have considered too small to ask forgiveness for. Do that now.

pray

God, you are too big for me to comprehend. Help me to know without doubt that you hear all my prayers.
