Does God need a lamp?

The lampstand will stand in the Tabernacle, in front of the inner curtain that shields the Ark of the Covenant. Aaron and his sons must keep the lamps burning in the Lord’s presence all night. This is a permanent law for the people of Israel, and it must be observed from generation to generation.

Exodus 27:21, NLT

God doesn’t need a lamp. But he sure likes light. This lamp in the Bible was exceptional, pure gold, and placed in his Temple. It kept burning all the time.

Is there a light in your house you never seem to turn off? I have one. It’s a white pedestal lamp, vintage, with a cute green shade that makes me smile. I rarely turn it off, especially in winter when the days are dark and short. It comforts me.

God embedded a lot of symbolism into this one lamp, and he wanted it to say, “I’m always here.” Priests would come and go, tending to it. Rituals would happen all around it. Seasons would blow in and dry out. And that lamp would keep going, a comforting constant for people struggling with change.

“I’m always here.”

God, thank you that you are always there. Your presence burns constantly for me, and I’m grateful. Bring reminders when it feels like the light might be going out.
