How do I accept forgiveness?

Then David confessed to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.” Nathan replied, “Yes, but the Lord has forgiven you, and you won’t die for this sin.”

2 Samuel 12:13, NLT

When faced with a mistake or a sin that weighs heavily on us, it can be hard to accept forgiveness. We can allow shame to rule us and wreck us.

I made a mistake in college that could have wrecked my career (and confidence) for good. It was like a hot brick that I carried around, scalding me. This mistake held a power over me that was out of proportion to what I actually did wrong.

David had a long way to go in his reign after this huge mistake in his life. He could have allowed it to wreck him for good, make him ineffective in what God had called him to. He had to accept God’s forgiveness and move forward. So do we.

God, my failures sometimes paralyze me. Help me to accept the forgiveness you offer so that I don’t become ineffective in my life.
