When you read the Ten Commandments, it’s easy to assume you’re doing pretty good. These are the biggies, the sins we hold up as the worst. So when we see someone doing one of the biggies, it’s like we’re climbing into the judge’s seat.

“At least I didn’t do that.” We feel a little bit superior, a little bit separate.

We aren’t.

We all come into the world with the same capacity to judge—and the same capacity to break God’s commands. All manner of reasons leads to our chosen sins. Good thing God gives us a way out of both the sinning and the judging. We would never walk into a courtroom and ask the judge to step aside. Yet, we do it in our hearts all the time.
