Can I break free from generational sin?

O Lord, we and our kings, princes, and ancestors are covered with shame because we have sinned against you.

daniel 9:8, NLT

Certain things run through families not because of genetics but because of sin. We don’t like to think of it this way. We may be okay with owning our own sin but shy away from how someone else’s sin affected us or vice versa.

The truth is that our sins and the shame that goes with them have tentacles that reach out to family and others.

The other truth is that these tentacles can be cut off through Jesus Christ. The moment we see our sins for what they are and ask for God’s help in breaking free is the moment we start to unwind the tangles of shame that hold families captive.

What sin and shame patterns do you recognize in your family? Decide today that it will not go forward to another generation.

pray

God, forgive me for the sins that reach beyond me. Help me to be the first in a long line of shame-breakers who are unwilling to allow those sins to be passed to another generation.
